This is very middle of the road for me - it is entertaining enough for me to finish and to read at a good pace - the learning curve is low so the reader does not get tripped up on too many out of place names or places, however, I also feel that the names were - cheesy - Owen is easy to remember, but Deathstalker - Noun-Verber it is - John Random? - Hazel Dark? sorry, I mean, D'Ark - remember, when you use an apostrophe, replace it with a *cough* -The story is very straight ahead, and each chapter follows a single character and a third person point of view - the downside on this is that more pages are devoted to the enemy than the supposed hero, who really, he is a hero because the author makes it so, not because he does anything heroic
Simon R Green has a writing style that I enjoy, and I fly through his pages, and the characters are not horrible they are just - there - I wait patiently for more substance, but this is a high sugar and caffeine rush with no substance, and I am left hungry when the pages close -
I did finish, so that places this as a three star minimum, but I cannot give it anything higher, because as the first book in a series, it is the only one I will read - and I will likely trade it in for something else the next trip to the used book store.

Very well written and fast paced. Extremely fun and easy to read. The world of the Empire is well layered. You will not regret buying this book.
Starts off slow. Quit it for awhile exasperated, but came back. Second half is better than the first.
This is one of the best space opera books out their!!! If you are looking for a good book look no further.
Fun story, lots of action, and fantastic characters. There is nothing I disliked or would have changed. An adventure from beginning to end.
Read this series back in my teen years and have loved it ever since. Great story that matches the Star Wars empire in scope, but, with more grittiness and depth of characters. A must read for fans of sci-fi!
I love all of the Deathstalker books. The characters are unique and are not what they seem on the surface. There is humor but it is on the dark side and there is some sense of hope but it comes in a subtle way. The book is an easy read but I would recommend it to older teens rather than young teens mainly for the drug use and the gore, although that might not be so shocking to young teens these days. I'm just an older adult who thinks young people should read age-appropriate material, so you can take my suggestion as just that -- a suggestion. I will say that after reading this first book in the series, I was hooked and couldn't wait for the next one to be available.
I have mixed feelings about this book it is ambitions and grand in scale for both better and worse. This allows it to have truly unique and epic moments, but it also means that there is more to keep track of for the author and it is difficult to keep everything straight. Some parts felt unnecessary, some repeated stuff from earlier passages, and some contradicted other parts. Overall it was still a worthwhile read, but it definitely detracted from the quality of the book. The main character also feels pretty absent for the whole book despite the series carrying his name. That said it had some of the coolest alien species and sci-fi tech I've read about.
Awesome series - from the Prequels (individually or in the combined compendium - Twilight of the Empire - to the Deathstalker Cycle - through the Trilogy that wraps it all up. Bigger than life heroes and villains, over the top action, humor - Deathstalker (and the rest of the books) have it all. The only complaint would be the price point of the e-books. So e-books were to be a more economical way to get books by reducing the publishing costs.... Yeah, I also know the price points are set by the author / publisher.... So when this one came down to $1.99 it was perfect. Oh, and it was nice to note when I was looking at the Deathstalker Canon that instead of an electronic version of Twilight of the Empire - the three individual books have been broken out to get that much more money..... Great story but pricey in e-book form,
