I own quite a few Agatha Christie stories, but I somehow missed this one.My wife and I watched the "new" Miss Marple series that was "based on" this book -- very loosely based on, I should say, as Miss Marple is not even mentioned in the book (in general, the new Miss Marple series takes a lot of liberties with the stories). Anyway, I couldn't remember how the "real" story went, so I purchased this one.
This is the first book with Superintendent Battle.
Many of the same characters return in "The Seven Dials Mystery", but we meet them here for the first time.
I did have some suspicion as to what was going on, but I wasn't 100% certain - her settling everything up always has surprises for me.

The Secret of Chimneys Agatha Christie Signature Edition Agatha Christie 9780007122585 Books Reviews
Other than the Passenger to Frankfurt, there isn't a Christie book I haven't read and enjoyed. I've read all of her works at least twice, a number more than that. I've listened to Audiobooks and watched the British TV productions of her work.
Superintendent Battle is featured in The Secret of the Chimney, and this is such a classic Manor House mystery! It is hard to believe it was written so long ago, because the language isn't dated.
Highly recommend.
An excellent story, with many surprises. Christie is up to her usual form, if you like Agatha Christie read this book.
My sister and I have been listening to many audio books while we sew in the afternoons. Lately, we have been listening to a bunch of Agatha Christie mysteries. This really stands above all the others! Hugh Fraser (who plays Capt. Hastings in the "Poirot" TV series) is an excellent reader and makes you forget that it is only one person reading the book. His voices for different characters are amazing and he can do multiple accents with ease!
This story is an amazing mystery, which will leave you gasping for breath by the time the end comes around! Fabulous! Mr. Fraser's rendition adds to the whole effect and leaves you feeling like you've just watched a movie! Really a grand work! For any Christie fans, this is a must!
This is one of Christie's earlier novels and it shows. The action doesn't move as smoothly as her later novels but Supt. Battle is great character and, as always, the mystery is fun. Christie is always a great, whether it's an early novel or one of her later ones I always enjoy them.
Most of Agatha Christie's stories have been made into movies or t.v. episodes so we think we know all about them, but that isn't true! Reading the original story is so much better! She reveals so much more about her characters than can be shown on film, and some of her characters are cut out of the story altogether on film! So reading her original work is a real joy and because she writes such a carefully constructed mystery story it gives me a deeper appreciation for her work. I recommend reading her stories in chronological order (whatever series you choose to start with) so that you don't miss any references her characters make to previous interactions with other characters. It just adds to the enjoyment when you feel you have grown to know the characters. This book is the first book of the Superintendent Battle series.
I find little to add to the positive reviews of this early light-hearted effort by (later) Dame Agatha. It is an excellent example of the old truism that " it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it". The elements of the story were, in her era, commonplace in novels, both serious and humorous, mystery and adventure the hero of mysterious origins who gets a kick out of danger, the lovely ladies, each adored by multiple admirers, the beleaguered Master of the House, a murder or two to spice the story, strange foreigners who are up to no good, stiff necked officials, a solid representative of law and order who must be avoided if possible, and others too humorous to mention (sic!). Out of these well-worn parts, Christie melds a lively story, playful, tongue in cheek, suspenseful, romantic, adventurous and just plain fun. While there is only Inspector Battle, not Poirot, Miss Marple,or Tuppence, it moves along quite nicely. Certainly I can recommend it to anyone in the mood for something that does not deal with the more repellent aspects of people and society.
Agatha Christie's "The Secret of Chimneys" is one of her earlier works (published in 1925) and is the first in her "Superintendent Battle" series. It's a fun romp of a book, but I hesitate to actually call it a mystery. There are mysterious things happening, but the sleuthing aspect of the book is really underdone. I'd really call it an Adventure book. Also, the characters are not exactly deep. Probably my biggest quibble with the book is that Superintendent Battle (the namesake of the series) is about as exciting as a rock. He might have 20 lines in the book and does almost nothing. Besides his mere presence, I'm not sure why the book and series bear his name. Again, it's a light and fun book and I'm rating it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5. But, I'd give it a more ambivalent 3-1/2 stars if I could.
The books in the "Superintendent Battle" series are
1. The Secret of Chimneys (Agatha Christie Mysteries Collection)
2. The Seven Dials Mystery (Agatha Christie Mysteries Collection)
3. Cards on the Table Hercule Poirot Investigates (Hercule Poirot Mysteries)
4. Murder Is Easy
5. Towards Zero
