Jane Heatherington studied the horizon, dread gnawing at her with small, sharp bites. The sky was a leaden mass of churning gray clouds that hung low on the water, and the ocean pummeled the shore with a strength that heralded the furor of the coming storm. Breathing in the tangy salt scent of the sea, Jane clenched her fists, making the edges of the delicate pink shell in her hand dig into the skin of her palm, grounding her as she struggled to hold her misery at bay.

We've got a heroine walking on rocky cliffs on a windy, dark, and gloomy day, a dark mysterious stranger, and murder mysteries. The first couple chapters felt like the author went through a Gothic list and was crossing them off as a lot of dark and gloomy elements were relayed.

The story is told from the heroine's pov and this helps to keep the hero dark and mysterious but even before the half way mark he is pretty much revealed to basically be fairly benign. The hero and heroine had good chemistry, if their love felt a little rushed.

The second half and whole revenge story felt somewhat cobbled together and I'm not sure I felt the emotional pull from it. The description of weather and the hero wearing a dark capped coat seemed to be the biggest Gothic themes and therefore, I was a bit let down with the Gothic feel.

Dark Prince Eve Silver 9780821781289 Books Reviews

Heroines redeeming the souls of reluctant heroes. Ms. Silver has a niche of Gothic, dark tales with all sorts of innuendo fluttering around and strong, flawed heroines who admit to lust even while perplexed by how strong it feels.

I am actually pleased with the two stories I've read, books 2&3. Suspending my disbelief doesn't come easily to me, I'm too mired in reality. But I've found that I rather like the dark, forbidding hero being attracted to the bright, optimistic heroine. It's corny, sometimes over-the-top, but still entertaining.

I would have preferred to have some POV from the hero, and for the heroine to not fall THAT fast into lust, but she's the author. So, begrudgingly, I'll keep reading Ms. Silver's stories.
I’m not a fan of Gothic romance, so the fact that I read books 1&2 were something I had to slog through for my book club. All 3 contain every possible or impossible imaginings of the heroines to the point of yawning stupidity -- after all, as romances, you know going in that there is a reasonable explanation for everything the heroes have done. This book, however, was very well scripted, even with all the Gothic horror scenarios thrown in. The story line here was believable and kept my interest to the finish and gave me enough impetus to write a review instead of just adding a star. All books are stand-alones, so I suggest you skip the first two and pick up Dark Prince, meet Jane and Aidan and judge for yourself.
This third book in the series lacks some of the moody, dark suspense of the usual Gothic fare. Hero & heroine both bear physical and emotional scars which they are reluctant to reveal. The H struggles between his desire for vengeance and his recently-developed feelings for the h, who would be emotionally harmed should he carry out his plans. The h battles with herself over the fact that she has developed feelings for a man she should hate. A better part of the story is the mystery concerning the Wreckers who lure ships to their destruction on the rugged coast. It becomes a challenge for the reader to unravel how the various characters are involved. I enjoyed the story and am moving on to Book 4...
I think I've been reading too many paranormal romances, because at first I thought for sure that Aidan Warrick was a vampire.

This was, thankfully, not true.

The writing was excellent. So far as I recall, there were no accidental slip-ups of modern slang into this dark, gothic period romance. The author has obviously done her research well, and did a wonderful job weaving an incredibly three-dimensional world.

My only issue with this story was the main character, Jane. For the most part she was likeable, but I thought she was almost TOO good. It actually got on my nerves after a while. Personal issue? Perhaps. But I would have liked to see a little more depth. I just did NOT relate to her much at all. I mean, yeah, all of us wish we were that innocent and good, but in reality? Meh.

Jane did have a good backbone despite my reservations toward her. She was prepared to do whatever she could to save her only remaining family, her father, but the way she went about it was a little 1800's bodice-ripper cliche for me.

But honestly, that's just me nitpicking. Overall, this book was engaging, clever, and had a few good twists to it that had me guessing. The resolution was satisfying and, as I noted before, the writing was rich and beautiful. I'm glad I picked it up. I could almost feel the sharp tinge of sea-salt spray against my face as I flipped through the pages.
I'm not sure if the intent with gothic means a little boring or slow, but it is at the start of this book. Some mystery around what he does, and some mystery around what happened to her, but it takes a while for things to really heat up. Then there was Jane. Her father treated her like crap, but she had a hard time believing he was a bad guy and that Aidan had a very good reason for hating him? No one likes to think ill of their parent or that they are not loved by a parent, but unfortunately, that doesn't mean that the parent is not a bad person. She knows her father wasn't an easy man and that he wasn't affectionate with her, like ever. And when your parent let's you go to pay a debt? That should have made her question his affection for her, and perhaps give Aidan's claims her father was a villain more credence. Either way, when the heroine is such a dolt, I have a hard time empathizing with her.

That is not to say that I did not finish the book. Overall, I liked the story and its dark premise. It was not the best gothic story to date, but after the initial slowness, it got better.
