Buried Secrets A Novel Men of Valor Irene Hannon 9780800721268 Books
This is a clean, Christian romance. I've read several books by Irene Hannon. This one was a bit of a surprise for me. I was expecting the intensity of her past suspense series. This book read more like a typical, clean secular romance with a lot of 'she's hot, he's hot' going on. The attraction between the two protagonists was said again and again with a spark, jolt or electrical zap but I didn't feel the emotional attraction between them and therefore as a reader didn't feel that '...sigh' moment.Sarah is well written. She's strong and independent. She has a bit of a chip on her shoulder from working in a typically man's occupation. She's described physically enough to get a decent mental image. Mac is less defined. He's an alpha male attracted to an alpha female. It's mentioned that he is an ex Navy SEAL but he doesn't exhibit any particular bearing, action, reaction, or skill set that would set him apart as a highly trained elite soldier.
The suspense/solving the crime part takes a back seat to the daily lives of the protagonists in the beginning but steadily increases as the bad guy gets more desperate and unstable. You know who it is for a good portion of the story but as the story progresses you realize just how twisted the bad guy is.
The Christian thread is weak. There is mention of prayer by the protagonists and a bible reference. There was a quote that always annoys me "God helps those who help themselves." Not only is that not in the Bible, it is the antithesis of what the Bible teaches about relying on God, remaining in His will and allowing Him to direct your path. If Christ had that attitude there would have been no sacrifice for our sins.
Technically the book is on par with past works by this author. She is a gifted writer and you'll find very few errors, a smoothly flowing, well thought out storyline, and knowledgeable details. It becomes obvious the next book will be about Mac's brother who ends his Special Forces military career and joins the FBI. Hopefully he will lose his adolescent attitude toward women.
In conclusion; I liked the story and I'm glad I read it, but it was more on par with a Love Inspired Harlequin suspense novel than the top of the line books I have come to expect from this author. I do recommend this book, just not as enthusiastically as I have endorsed the other ten I have read.

Buried Secrets A Novel Men of Valor Irene Hannon 9780800721268 Books Reviews
I had such high hopes for this book. I have read most of Hannon's romantic suspense books. I was a little disappointed here. It was very predictable. I mean, of course the love interests end up together and of course the bad "guy" gets "his"; however, this seemed even more predictable to me, to the point that I could scan-read and not miss much. There was not a lot of suspense either. Because the story, from the get-go, revealed who the bad guys were and told the story often from their POV, it took the suspense out of this for me. On the other hand, I enjoyed the relationship between Mac and the chief. That was the best part of the book.
"Secrets could create very odd . . . . and unpleasant . . . . alliances." It appears that someone may be getting away with murder, or is it just a coincidence that a very cold case has given up all but one of its witnesses?
When a decades old skeleton is found buried on construction property in a small municipality, county detective Mac McGregor is dispatched to help the local police chief Lisa Grant process the scene. Following rather frosty introductions, the two agree to put aside first impressions and pool their resources to solve an intriguing case. The burial site contains several important clues which ultimately lead the two officers straight into the path of a seriously dangerous individual whose intent is rather obvious; secrets must remain buried.
Aside from the case, Mac McGregor and Lisa Grant feel an immediate attraction towards each other; both having recently moved to the St. Louis area in order to put aside their previous, more dangerous careers; in the hopes that they might find a way to settle down and establish families of their own. Deciding to make their relationship a priority after the case is solved, they never imagined that one of them would find his/herself in the crosshairs of a cold blooded killer.
Irene Hannon writes wonderful romantic suspense and "Buried Secrets" is no exception.
Stress had taken a toll on Lisa Grant’s life so she gave up her detective job in Chicago to work as a police chief in the small town of Carson. The easier pace was doing wonders for her, that is, until a construction crew dug up a human skeleton. Mac McGregor left the SEALs for a quieter kind of job. Now working as a county detective, they send him to Carson to assist Lisa Grant in solving who they found in the unmarked grave. Though their initial meeting doesn't go so well, it's not long before they gain a deep respect for one another along with a deep attraction as well. As they work together to gather information and evidence about what happened all those years ago, it becomes apparent that someone doesn't want the truth to be revealed and is willing to go to any lengths to keep the secrets buried.
This was a great start to Irene Hannon's Men of Valor series. It really was the perfect blend of suspense and romance. One thing I really liked was that even though Lisa was a police chief, she wasn't an 'in-your-face', hard, type woman. She was a nice combination of strong yet soft. Mac was a great guy, the kind of hero I like reading about. He was strong yet tender and comfortable in his own skin. I loved the way he was with Lisa. I just would have liked a little more sizzle between them but know they were holding off because of working the case together. One thing I thoroughly enjoyed were the McGregor brothers. The interaction and banter between them was so much fun. I am looking forward to getting to know those brothers better. I appreciated that both Mac and Lisa had a personal faith that got them through the difficult things they faced. It was a great reminder that God is in control, of everything, whether good or bad. If you enjoy romantic suspense then this is one I would recommend. If you don't believe me, head on over to Carson and see just what Buried Secrets will be revealed.
