I liked the book, but, for heaven's sake, why does Phryne Fisher have to be the top dog of everything in every story? She has all the answers, for everyone. She knows best. She is smug and self-satisfied. She is just....irritating. Smug. Very humane and broad-minded, also, which keeps me reading the books, despite the fact that "Phryne the Perfect" so frequently irks me to my very core. Always well written and entertaining, as always. I just wish the main character was more likeable!

I love the Miss Fishers stories. A big fan of the video series I was at first disappointed that the characters and the stories in the books didn’t match up. As I read the books I discover new things to e joy and incites into the characters you don’t always see in a movie or TV show. I like the detail Ms. Greenwood supplies throughout her books that allows my imagination to take me to the places she writes about.
I read all of this series. I have read the whole series to date and I think Ms. Greenwood is far and away the best of the 'woman of the '20s out in the world' sub-genre. I tried some of the others and they were OK, but Phryne is far above the average!!! I have yet to read a poor one of the series. And an additional note as far as the TV series goes, it does a good job taking the primary plot and making the exquisite costumes and acting...cause you to feel in the era (another reason why the others series of this type is less successful)...the books by Ms Greenwood are superb--the TV show shows them off so well that no one should quibble over which is 'better'--yes, the books, but the shows has the perfect actors, the perfect locations, the perfect clothes---and together they truly show off Ms Greenwood's skill with Phryne Fisher!!
This is the 17th Phryne Fisher book I have read and I am looking forward to reading number 18. I was first introduced Phryne Fisher from watching Miss Fishers Murders on Netflix. I think that Kerry Greenwood has found a very strong character in Miss Fisher The fact that she can describe incidents that happened in the past to Phryne and relate them to incidents occurring inPhrynes present life is partially what makes the books a good read. I do like the quotes at the beginning of each chapter and the subplot that runs throughout at the end of each chapter. I am going to be very disappointed when I finally read the last of Phryne Fishers adventures
Elephants in the backyard; two missing girls; gamblers, prostitutes, cops, crooks and the annual "Queen of the Flowers" parade all combine to make this one of my favorite Phryne Fisher novels.
Miss Fisher, wealthy and titled though perhaps a tad indiscreet, is a Melbourne private detective with a penchant for getting into trouble without trying very hard. In this delightful mystery she is shepherding four young "flower maidens" as they prepare for the annual parade. One of the maidens disappears and, not long after that, Phryne's own adopted daughter Ruth also goes missing. Frantic to find them, Phryne and her companions - including her long-suffering companion Dot Williams and her ANZAC friends Bert and Cec - hunt high and low for the missing girls.
In addition, there are two subplots woven into this mystery set in the years just after World War I and just before The Great Depression. In one of those subplots Ruth wants to learn who her father is. In the other Phryne and her crew try to rescue a good girl from an evil household.
Phryne Fisher, irrepressible and unafraid, is one of crime fiction's most unique heroines Tough, beautiful, sassy and sexy she is also smart and has a backstory that includes serving as an ambulance driver in the Great War. In "Queen of the Flower" she will need all of those attributes if she is going to save at least one of the girls and a little help from an unlikely source if she is to save both.
An excellent mystery combined with wonderful characters make this a great read.
I discovered the Phryne Fisher books when I watched the Australian TV series. I simply had to read all of Kerry Greenwood's books, and I have not been disappointed. I bought all of them when I discovered the series. As is nearly always the case, the film cannot live up to the books, but I continue to follow both, and I will keep buying when they are published.

The author presents Phryne's life within the 1920s in Australia, and the stories mirror the social climate of the time. Phryne is an accomplished and independent lady who is a detective long before it was acceptable for a female to be one, and she is capable of almost any endeavor.

The author makes the reader care about the characters andI will continue to read Kerry Greenwood's book as soon as they are published.
First, I would like to say that I found the beginning of this book, with the elephant, totally charming and one of the best introductions I've read in a while. However after that, I have to wonder what happened to Ms. Greenwood when she wrote this book; it contained several things I would consider mistakes as well as marked personality changes to the characters. One such mistake was suddenly changing Phryne's nickname to "jade lady" instead of "silver lady" as in the previous books. The characters I had so enjoyed in the first 13 books are portrayed as shallow and self-serving. In this writing, Dot has become a hypocrite condemning the morality of Ruth's mother while facilitating Phryne's affair with a married man.
It also seemed the chronology didn't quite stay coherent; things which happened on one day were later discussed as having happened on another day. Some of the plot devices are thrown in without explanation so they seem very contrived, while other sections of the book are just filler, and to me, detracted from the story.
All together, I found myself paying more attention to style than story and completely lost my suspension of disbelief.
