I read this as part of the KU programme. I absolutely loved the author's other books with this format (a few love stories in one book) but this one fell a little flat for me. The characters weren't as likable and overall I wasn't convinced.
In the first story I didn't like the way that the Duke 'blackmailed' the h into being his mistress for the event. It's not a plot I'm fond of and the h was too innocent to have been coerced into this type of arrangement.
In the second story with the arranged marriage, I really hated the H at times. He was so cold and unfeeling towards his wife and it was all a little too late for me by the time he got around to loving her. He'd treated her so badly since they got married.
The book is still worth reading if you like this author but not up to her usual standard.
This was a thoroughly delightful story packed with action and romance. Three couples all set with their own story lines but entangled like a spider's web. This was great fun trying to guess who is going to compromise whom, when and where. Gotta watch those dark corners and sneaky out of the way places dear Duke!
We actually have six characters in this story that are the focus of plenty of to do's. How our author keeps her head on straight is a miracle in itself.
First there is the Duke of Somervale and Lady Reyne playing at being betrothed to avoid a mansion full of bride's maids. A chance meeting gives the Duke just what he needs but more than he bargained for. Lady Reyne is short funded so she sees her chance at securing her future in the way she wants it only to have it slip right between her fingers into another destiny. Quite cleaver really.
Secondly, we have Kate who is boarding with Lady Reyne and is a dear friend to her. Kate becomes entangled with Andrew Carlisle whom she knew when she was young and impressionable and despises more than a bed full of fleas. Their encounters through out the story are full of misconceptions with a powerful hunger of attraction that will leave them reeling.
Third, we have Lady Penelope Townsend with her husband. A husband in name only with an incredible chip on his shoulder and a powerful loathing for the woman he married. What can Lady Penelope do to try and get her husband to be the man whom she thought would be her whole world. How does one seduce one's own husband who is not willing to even be in the same room with you? Hmm......a house full of bride's maids with conniving minds and other wedding guests are sure to prove to be some help. Well, at least I would hope so or our Lady is in dire trouble.
The author has given us every element of emotion, seduction, trickery, misconceptions and anything else you would love to throw into the mixture. A very busy book that doesn't confuse you when having to deal with three sets of characters but a very, very entertaining one. I honestly couldn't put the darn thing down for the life of me. It was delightfully fun and I look forward to see what Leigh Michaels comes up with next.
I just started reading this author and I am hooked. The story line was fun and the characters enjoyable.
I may just not be a fan of this type of writing. I thought this would be about one couple, instead we have three. The couple described in the summary, the ones i thought this book was about, were actually quite boring to me. Olivia pretended to be engaged to the Duke so that he could safely navigate the herds of eligible women at his sister's wedding, being a Duke and all, quite a catch. they were likeable enough, just sort of boring. The next couple, Kate, who is staying with Olivia, and her old friend Andrew, who is staying at the Duke's. Kate was so unlikeable to me, i skipped through a few pages so i wouldnt have to deal with her rigidness and negativity. Andrew was soooo laid back and unassuming, she just did not deserve him. Now the 3rd couple, i loved. I wish the entire book was about them. The Earl and Penelope. He married her for her money, but at the same time resented her for it and refused to even sleep with her, or be intimate with her in any way. Avoided most conversations, meals, just being near her. I had issues with that b/c it just didnt make any sense. Even after it was explained later on it the book, it did not seem reason enough for him to distance himself in the way that he did. So the entire time, she's trying to find ways to make her husband like her...not okay. And he was constantly referred to as The Earl, even by her, which was so annoying, i think it prevents you from fully connecting with the character. Penelope was likeable enough. All in all, the story line jumped everywhere and while the writing was done well, if you're not a fan of this sort of story, then pass. I found it very annoying and wish it was more developed and focused on one couple instead of three. It's hard to keep all three interesting.
